I will never trust Apple again with managing all my passwords.
Remember MobileMe? Used to sync passwords; worked a treat. Then one day, someone at Apple rolled out of bed and decided, âWe donât want to be in the passwords business anymore.â
And like that, it was gone.
Whoâs to say Apple doesnât do it again. A re-alignment of KPCs; a new focus on the latest high-value platform; a decision to concentrate only on âcore functionsââŚwhatever management gobbledygook it is, if Apple suddenly decides it doesnât want to look after passwords and sync again, once more weâd be cast adrift. At least with 1Password it has one function and only one service to sell us. For that reason, we can be pretty certain it is not going to stop selling password services.
The other advantage of not relying on Apple is, of course, leaving yourself open to other possibilities regarding OSs and devices. While I doubt seriously I will ever want to leave the Apple ecosphere, I prefer to keep it optional through my choice of file formats, tool types, and â yes â password management methods.
I was a big Google Reader fan so I understand being burned by a company. However, I donât think Apple will abandon password management again. IMO, the chances of that happening dropped to near zero with the introduction of the iPhone. But I donât use keychain for my important passwords because I need to use other operating systems.
Yes, Keychain is a just a feature to Apple but an app like 1Password is the lifeblood of a company like Agilebits.
I like the fact that their continued success depends on keeping my passwords safe.
I literally said I understand it for a small shop with limited resources, that is not what we are talking about. We are talking about 1Password.
These companies are businesses and their applications are products, itâs not some hobby. Other companies use this product and rely it themselves, and degrading your product (in some peopleâs opinion) as a way to cut cost as one of the first big moves after getting big investment is a very bad sign.
Iâve been very pleased with the way the free version of bitwarden is working. iâm also super excited about having a TOTP generator built into my password manager (paid feature). I havenât started paying for it yet because I paid for a yearâs worth of LastPass without seriously considering migrating to Bitwarden. But migration was pretty easy for passwords/notes only (once I figured out how to export the data correctly and do the import correctly).
I cannot use Appleâs iCloud keychain because I want to be able to access my passwords and info on computers that are not connected to my Apple ID I am still using Bootcamp to run that other OS, and sometimes I use the passwords on my kidâs user accounts on our computers. Iâd also like the nuclear option of logging into my vault in a browser on another computer. Thatâs probably really not advisable, but in an emergency, Iâd like the option.
Respectfully, strongly preferring apps that respect the conventions of the platform is not elitist. I would want the same thing back when I was on Windows prior to 2011. One of the main reasons I switched to the Mac was because those conventions fit me better. Just because some people prioritize things differently than you do does not make them elitist. For me, I prioritize the âMac feelâ higher than you might, and over other criteria (although there are some areas where I have little choice, like using MS 365).
I periodically plug my iPhone into a USB port on my Mac for backup. While I was there, it was an easy matter to drag Strongboxâs .kdbx file from its location on the Mac to the Strongbox entry in the Files tab of the connected iPhone.
I like this way because I do not need iCloud turned on for the Strongbox app.
I am going to try out BitWarden. Cheaper than 1Password along with a native Mac app. Plus it has some encrypted file sharing options which is intriguing.
Actually, Bitwardenâs app is Electron-based, too.
So, the Minimalist Password Manager. Very tempting because of its easy seamless integration with iCloud. (But, doggone it, Iâm trying not to use âThe Cloud.â) It has more import options than Strongbox, including 1Passwordâs proprietary export file format. It offers different record types for credit cards, software licenses, and secure notes. True to its name, the app is simple in appearance and only black and white. It reminds me of those generic black and white boxes of pasta and other economical grocery items that were the rage at one time. It looks different from any Mac app Iâve ever seen, but as far as I can tell, it is a native Mac app. (Please correct me if you know better!) Twenty bucks a year or sixty bucks one time purchase, but Iâm confused because those prices are shown in the app on both the Mac and on my iPhone. I donât know if thatâs a single subscription for both or if you have to pay for each app in its respective App Store?
They sure do give 1Password a rough time and one of their strongest marketing claims seems to be, hey, weâre from Canada!
1Password is also Canadian?
Minimalist is a non starter for me as they will never likely support anything else except safari.
Have you already taken a look at the new version of iCloud for Windows?
Neither will Strongbox but the nice thing about using a KeePass frontend like Strongbox, is that I should be able to take the underlying database file with me to another platform and another KeePass frontend! Right, @bwintx ?
Thanks for that information. I think I will still give it a test run. I havenât really paid attention to password managers since I started using 1Password. Some quick research produced some very good alternatives, and at a substantially better price. If I am going to use an Electron-based app, then I might as well use one that doesnât hit my pocketbook quite as hard.
Yes, correct.
Also, the Safari-only stance is the main reason why I use Strongbox only on iOS, not Mac. To be fair, the Strongbox devâs position is that heâs waiting for AutoFill to be supported on the non-Safari browsers, and perhaps heâs right to rely on that potentiality; but I want something that works with other browsers today, not maybe someday.
Yup, with KeePass weâve got our choice of frontends.
I tried it about two months ago, but it wouldnât sync all of my photos or files. I hope the new version is better, for those that still need it.
Have you considered trying out the new version to see if it fixes your issue from two months ago?
Are you using Bitwarden on IOS as well? If so how is that going?
