Off-topic: That’s three people in this thread who’ve used the word “bitch.” Not only is it uncreative, but it’s a sexist term that probably shouldn’t be thrown around so casually in a community that seems to be largely male. Can we find better ways of expressing ourselves, please?
UI - I do not use 1Password because I demand that it must follow macOS UI conventions while it does what I need. I use it because it is highly efficient in helping me manage and use my passwords on an hourly basis across three different platforms (macOS, iOS, iPadOS).
Bloat - Memory bloat worries me. I do not see increased performance speed as a valid tradeoff in this case.
Local Vaults - The loss of local vaults worries me. Not primarily because someone will now have my secure information stored (securely) in the cloud. Rather because someone demands that my secure information must be stored only on their cloud.
I cannot predict where yet I will land in the choices to keep 1PW7 until the wheels fall off, upgrade to 1PW8, or dump 1PW entirely for something else. I appreciate the insights being given here in advance to help me understand what I might expect in making one of those choices.
The lack of local vaults is, by far, the most troubling aspect of all of this. Initially I took that to mean that there would be no local data at all, but I strongly suspect that’s not the case (still haven’t verified though).
Agile Bits is a great encryption software company but I’m not especially convinced that they’re particularly good at being a cloud service provider. I’m very happy to support them, and would (and have been considering anyway) go with a subscription in order to do that, but for the management of my secrets I would like a product and not a service.
Electrons’ biggest downstroke for me is the lack of automation
I use Keyboard Maestro to let 1Password “automatically” log in to some Apps.
Worked great in v7. Did not work in the first two v8 betas, but they seem to have fixed keyboard shortcuts in a recent nightly build and now my (slightly) modified macros work again
I think it’s worth noting that “I don’t want to synch this in the cloud at all” and “I don’t want to depend on 1Password’s cloud” are two different objections.
Also, the massive down side of the 1PW sync setup is that it requires knowing two passwords, not one. And there’s no way you’d ever have the second one memorized.
So let’s say you’re out of your local area for a few days. Your iPhone drops into the a lake. If you run to the store and buy a new phone, with iCloud synced vaults you’re good to go immediately. With cloud vaults, you’re potentially stuck until you get home and find your second “password“.
With earlier versions of 1PW (not sure about 7) you could save your vault to a USB key and access it from another computer. I’m wondering if that behavior is gone in v8…?
I like Allison, I’ve met her and I’m a particular fan of the Taming the Terminal series. However, based on her post and her responses in the comments it doesn’t seem like she’s a regular user of 1Password. Despite this she’s decided that she knows enough to tell 1Password users how they should feel about this transition (in a fairly dismissive way).
There’s been some really good commentary on this on Six Colors, Upgrade, and ATP. Honestly, I was kind of disappointed by the commentary on Connected, but at least that evinced that the hosts that have actually use the software on a regular basis. By comparison, Alison was getting way out over her skis on this post.
I do. The big issue for me is that I can get into my iCloud account easily, and I’ve memorized my master password. But I can’t practically memorize my second key.
The whole premise of 1Password to me was….well….ONE password - easy-ish to remember, but hard to guess. That extra key breaks the fundamental premise, and really makes me cranky.
And it wouldn’t be necessary if 1P weren’t forcing all of us to go to not just the cloud, but their cloud.
If you want more convenience you have to sacrifice security. It’s a matter of balance.
If I was syncing a local vault via iCloud or Dropbox I would want long random passwords on both 1PW and my cloud account. If someone succeeded in downloading my vault they could take all the time they needed to brute force it.
The combination of a secret key and a long password makes that virtually impossible with today’s technology.
Ok, so the reason I asked this question is that, based on earlier questions I have posed, it’s my understanding that if you sync your passwords through iCloud (or, presumably, any other cloud service), your passwords are already in the cloud anyway, so what difference does it make if your vault is in the cloud? And, please note, I also fall into the uncomfortable-with-no-local-vaults category.
