2018 Mini - any reason a flash drive would continually disconnect?

I have a 2018 Mini and a Sandisk flash drive. If I plug it directly into the mini and try to copy all the files off of it, it spontaneously fails and the drive’s status light keeps flashing blue at a constant pace.

If I plug it into a hub that’s plugged into the mini, no issues whatsoever.

It seems to me that the direct connect should be more reliable, not less.

Anybody have any wild theories as to why this might be the case?

Are the flash drive and hub plugging into the same USB port?

If not, I’d suspect a glitch in that port.

I would too. Have you tried plugging anything else into that port? Does the issue only happen with that drive?
