An Ode to My Apps

Both excellent points. The duplicate events are super helpful for appointments where I need to block the time off at work but maybe I need my family to see if on their calendar too.

Sync is a service rather than a product so it makes sense as a subscription.

But an app should be a product rather than a service. They make it become services because of adding features and “improving” UI.

That’s indeed a nice feature. BusyCal has that too.

Impossible for me to function without Bear Notes and 1Password. I do have lifetime purchases for several essential apps like Agenda, OmniFocus, 1Blocker, Tripsy, so there may have been more on the annual subscription list of lifetime that weren’t available as an option.

I am obviously missing something since there is so much love for 1Password. How is it different/better than using Apple passwords?

I realize this is an edge case, but for me 1Password is much better than Apple’s basic solution because of all the developer options:

My must have stack:

Setapp

  • Spark Mail
  • Busycal
  • Craft
  • Cleanmymac
  • CleanshotX

DevonThink
1Password
Neovim (free)

My must have apps:

  • Apple mail
  • Devonthink Pro
  • Obsidian
  • Cleanshot X
  • Dropover
  • Forklift
  • Cloudmounter

About Obsidian: I used it in the past but then gave up because I was experimenting rather than using it. I then decided to stop playing around with it and dedicate some time to create a simple setup for my needs (just the plugins I really need and a simple interface) and now it has become my most used everyday tool, even though I don’t use it for notes but to create sort of databases.
There is some overlapping with Devonthink but I decided to consdier Obsidian as my database (Books collections, listing of every kind) and Devonthink for documents (real documents for which I may have a provacy concern).

totally agree with this one and forgot to mention it. both the collapsing to one feature and the duplication feature i’ve not seen easily anywhere else. 100% winner!

shared vaults for family and work is a killer feature. im sure apple will start doing similar but likely never as versatile.

Sharing of passwords is already available and I believe it’s more versatile than 1password as you can share with anyone, not just someone in your family.

I’m currently migrating from 1Password family to Apple passwords. I wish Apple PW had custom fields, that may come in time. Currently use Notes section. And yes using for identities etc, not just website passwords.

Main reason for switching is I find it so difficult to share 1Password vaults with family members who are not tech savvy. If I wasn’t around they would struggle. Needs to be simpler…

I’m sure I’ve shared 1Password links outside my family. It gives you a URL and lets you set an expiry on the link.

Perhaps I’m wrong but I feel like I’ve done this before.

oh wow i must have missed that apple password sharing!

that said, 1password i share with more than my family. we use it extensively at work with different teams and depts since they let you create vaults.

I gave up on OmniGroup, probably unfairly, when my old Macs wouldn’t run a new enough OS for current OmniFocus releases.

I really liked OmniOutliner, but it appeared to be dying on the vine.

With OO6, OmniGroup seems to be considering it a front line application again.

I wrote my first automation yesterday. It lets me have one or more versions of my outline plus a Research topic for notes. Tags go in an xref column.

Click on a line in the Outline section, run the automation, and it’s like a focus on the selected topic plus Research notes that match any of the tags in the focused section.

I haven’t used it in a real project yet. That comes in another week or so. I’m quietly optimistic this may be useful.
