Anyone using Freeform regularly?

I’m pretty sure it’s me, and not the software. I can group items, but I can’t figure out how to lock a group to a specific X & Y, so I can find them again.

I’ve been using it lately to make a lot of flowcharts. Perfect for this.

I wish that it has a Pen tool (Bezier). In the absence of this, I cannot do the sketching that I want/need. In other respects, I am happy with it (when I do not need a sketch)

  1. I don’t know if anyone knows Prezi but that seems an ideal kind of use for Freeform: big canvas but the ability to zoom on discrete portions.

  2. I’ve also thought about using it for infographics for my teaching, but haven’t made much progress as of yet.

  3. My university has introduced Smart boards into some of the classrooms. I wonder what they make Freeform redundant, or is there a use where they could be integrated?

  4. There used to be an app from Literature and Latte called Scapple. Freeform reminds me of that, but of course, with more ability to integrate beyond scrivener.

I’m interested in any other classroom or teaching uses.

Scapple is alive and well, though macOS only.

I’m not a big user of mind mapping apps, but I’ve tried a number of them and Scapple is still my favorite.

I love Scapple. Brilliant app.

I wouldn’t call my current one large, but its so laggy that its barely usable. Not sure if its a bug or if the file is simply too big. I’ll have to look for a more robust solution.

How big is the board? (Also might be good to clarify if we mean canvas size or number of assets in there.)

I’ve not experienced any issues with large (=lots of assets) boards yet. However, as it happens it occurred to me last night, before I saw this post, that this might become an issue and I actually split my biggest board into two boards in anticipation of this.

The board (now boards x2) store reference images for painting. There were over 200 images in the original board, along with links. They were stored as small images (<10cm each) and I wasn’t experiencing any problems, but as I was clicking on the images and viewing them full size last night, I started to wonder how Apple retains the full size image data within a Freeform board, and then I started to wonder what the maximum capacity for that might be. Then I split the board in two just in case

It’s not Freeform, but I use Miro for work everyday and the main reason I notice lag is people re-sizing objects to ginormous proportions, which makes the board absolutely huge. Some people lose all sense of scale on infinity canvases (I totally get it, that isn’t a criticism). I’m a Miro admin for my employer (I provide tech support for the named app) and a lot of my Miro support is just me going into a board and resizing assets to the correct scales and setting up frames so that people can navigate them easily. Easiest admin role I cover to to be honest

Canvas size? Hard to say. I don’t know what is considered big or huge. The size in megabytes? No idea. As for the number of assets, there are no pictures: its just text, handwritten and typed. BTW, I have a 5th gen iPad Air (M1).
