Apparently Apple News is fairly popular

I am a nerd and a fan. :slightly_smiling_face:

I was actually also seeing them in the grid of articles, usually between the different sections. But the NextDNS filter has gotten rid of them.

I wish I could tune them out! Safari ad blockers and RSS feeds that don’t show ads have spoiled me and ads stand out like a neon light.

I opened the News app for the first time in years today, because this thread reminded me of it. It’s not the ads that bother me (and most of them are being blocked by my DNS server anyway), it’s all the stuff I don’t want to see or can’t access. There are far too many News+ articles on my page that are pointless since I can’t read them (so they are basically ads). There is a a big “2024 Election” section that it gave me the option to block, but it’s still there anyway. And finally, just a lot of articles I have no interest in. It’s recommending a ton of People Magazine articles for some reason. I assume If I spend enough time blocking and liking, it would get better, but out of the box, it seems barely better than MSN.

Sounds like you aren’t subscribed to News+. Without the subscription virtually all the content is paywalled. With the subscription there are links in articles to paywalled/non-News+ sites, but they are in the minority.

I’ve got my feed mostly free of the News+ articles and the blocked channels. Fairly easy, 2 steps. Here’s how:

First, open settings app and go to News. Toggle the “Restrict Stories in Today” option on. Hat tip to @Ben_Wah for that!

Next, take some time to search for sites of interest to you and follow them. You’ll soon have a sidebar full of sites. Only those you follow will show up in the “Today” section. If none of those sites are News+ sites you won’t have any of those littering your feed. Of course, you’ll lose out on some of those sites free content as well.

If you follow “Topics” you’ll notice that these will bring in articles from all of the sources including those you don’t follow and those you’ve blocked.

It does take a little time to “customize” your feed. They will continue to send alternate feeds to fill the page up. Eventually it will get to where you see the majority of subjects you’re interested in.
