The European Commission has today designated Apple with respect to iPadOS, its operating system for tablets, as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (“DMA”). Apple now has six months to ensure full compliance of iPadOS with the DMA obligations.
Nice. More incentive for Mozilla and others to also actually compete in the browser space on iOS. It looked as if Apple were going to get away with their fragmented interpretation of what their mobile operating system is due to iPad(OS) not being labelled a ‘gatekeeper’ previously.
I am certain we can expect all the changes to launch with iPadOS 18.x this autumn exactly six months from now and not a day sooner though.
