Breakout boxes and similar things introduce more latency (particularly for audio equipment) than just having PCI lanes. I’d prefer an option for lanes. Not having it isn’t the end of the world, but I’m not sure I’ve ever had a less fun task than trying to fix latency issues in software.
I know very little about such things, but I thought Thunderbolt was essentially externalised PCI lanes?
There is the option to cluster Mac Studios. But that’s pretty hardcore.

I did too, but I was corrected elsewhere. The important thing is the physical distance from the connector. A cable will always introduce more latency than a direct connection would.
I can tell you that my own audio equipment has tons of latency, and it increases as the cable length increases. It’s very annoying and tedious to fix.
