Apple Mail doesn't fetch new mail

I have one Google Workspaces account for work, and a private Fastmail account, and the same problem on both: I’m almost never told about new mail.
I frequently run a manual “Get all new mail” and find 8+ unread emails.

Is there something I can do to fix this?

This is on macos, by the way.

Please look in, and screen shot if you see a surprise there, Mail → Menu: Preferences → Tab: General → Item: Check for new Messages.

Mine is set for every minute.

I could have SWORN it was set to Automatic!
