Apple’s string of failures ? ... Jason Snell

The article feels like someone missed the opportunity to return the Vision Pro within the return window and is venting out on Apple.

Without taking risks nothing innovative ever happens.

It’s far too early to say either Apple Intelligence or the VisionPro are failures.

  1. LLMs seem to take 2-3yrs to bake well. Then we need to find ways to make it useful. So I don’t expect to see much value here until 2026-27.
  2. VisionPro - hardware is even more challenging, this is a long term play. Is it for productivity? consumption? etc.

Apple has mishandled both, but it is far too early to have any idea yet.

I think the Vision Pro may be on a shelf at the back of the lab right now. Apple is working on Apple Intelligence, legal problems with the DOJ, and continuing problems with the EU. But I’m sure they will dust it off in a couple of years.

I don’t own a Vision Pro and have no interest in it, but it brings new and very cool technologies to Apple that can be used in other products. Whether it ultimately succeeds as a product or not, I think it was good for Apple to release it.

As for AI (Apple Intelligence), it has not lived up to the hype for me–not even close. I have tried the writing tools many times, but they don’t cut it. I almost always end up going to ChatGPT, which is far superior, IMO.

Buyers (sic)remorse?
Snell has been writing about Apple for over thirty years. You may disagree with his viewpoint, but I think it’s not reasonable to attribute an ulterior motive to his writing.

The fact that they went straight for the Vision Pro and not bone conduction AirPods Glasses and iterate from there is wild to me.

I’ve always found him to be thoughtful and sincere, with really smart analysis.

AirPods Glasses etc. based on what’s selling today would need AI to be useful, and Apple doesn’t have that yet. :frowning:

And oddly enough, bone conduction AirPod glasses would probably actually be more difficult to do well than basically two monitors strapped to your head.

Even if they just had the current functionality of AirPods at launch I think they would have sold well.

That is entirely possible, but it’s only been about 18 months since I was able to get rid of my prescription glasses. And the only ones that I have seen demonstrated, that I might consider, probably won’t be available for at least a year.

It’s not stopped Aftershokz from selling well.

I was talking about the glasses part. I looked at Shokz headsets the first time I spent an hour looking for an AirPod Pro in the grass.

But thanks to a defective (1st gen) AirPods Pro which resulted in Apple replacing both ear buds, I have no current need to add to Apple’s bottom line.:grinning:

But don’t you want to support the developer?

I think his uncle Tim is taking care of him.

For what it’s worth, Jason doesn’t get to write his own headlines at Macworld. In fact, he used a different headline when he linked to it on Six Colors: Apple’s historic successes have bred its recent failures – Six Colors as Christian pointed out.

I agree. I’ve always bought refurbished Apple products (which has been a great strategy for me - zero issues, presumably because of the original build quality). But the new Mini is such a strong product offering that I’ve been compelled to buy new!

Good to hear as I thought “given the performance, aesthetics and value of the mini …I really gain nothing by sourcing older Macs on eBay” Hopefully this year I’ll refresh our aged computers with new M4.

Really would have loved to get my pre-teens the iMac but the same value prop isn’t there as I like the ability to choose larger than 24" display.

I think Apple’s most important things are to continue to flesh out their high volume stuff. I’m ready to buy 3 or more of the next Apple TV and whenever the HomePod with Display hits at least 2x.

VR/AR is nice the reality is I need all of the little Apple devices to all work in concert and that’s more impactful for my computing life than far reaching technology at premium $$$$
