(I will probably just do the rash and dumb thing and end up with an Ultra; please don’t judge me, I am merely mortal and even with a new battery I have a hard time believing the 41mm watch can keep up with the 2 hour workouts I’ve started doing.)
I’m not going to do that. I hope you enjoy your new watch regardless of when you buy it and which model you get!
I was going to say, get the Ultra. Three months of lack of frustration and ease of usage has some value to it. Enjoy.
Not a matter of need but having hypertension, for which I take two different medications, I want to take my blood pressure every day.
Currently in consultation with my GP about the meds as regularly the BP is well down below the maximum level they expect. Sometimes radically lower (once in the last week it was 96/60 when their max level wanted is 130/???) but very often around 120/60.
Think I am over-medicated now especially since augmenting my BP monitoring regime with Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction exercises. (For those who know it those exercises are five minutes of Breath — using the Mindfullness app on my Apple Watch, a full “body scan” — recording the duration via the iOS Health App, a repeat of Breath, a 1 minute MBSR reflection, and finally a state of mind analysis — using the Mindfulness Watch app. Only then do I take my BP.) Also do a morning Mindfulness session of Breath, Reflect, CAC mediation, and reading four Bible pages then an late night session of BReath, Reflect, and State of Mind just before bed.
Well known “white coat effect”. Prior to my consultation the GP wanted four days of twice daily readings. These were skewed higher than the regular results I have been getting.
Thank you! Another major concern for me is summer is when we typically are away the most on weekends and the like, and I have some work travel mid-September. Do I want to have a Watch battery while travelling that doesn’t hold a charge?
But as @Synchronicity says, I could just replace the battery for 10% of the cost and wait three more months.
I am not an Apple salesman but there are some assumptions here (however valid). Might be longer than 3 months. If I were “you”, I would get the Ultra and then if there is some fantastic feature in the future — upgrade at your convenience whether soon or later. FWIW.
I’m familiar with white coat syndrome, but in my case we were talking about how often he wanted me to check my BP at home. You should, of course, follow your doctor’s recommendations.
I originally asked “how often . . . “ because I’ve been reading about smartwatch induced health anxiety, the downside of the same devices that will “transform health care and energize scientific research . . .”
In one case it led to a woman performing 931 ECGs in a 12 month period.
Interesting and weird as taking a patient’s blood pressure multiple times a day is pretty much a fetish in medical circles especially in hospital. But if you doctor says once a week is syfficient then you need to follow their advice.
I just bought an Ultra. Buy the computer you need, when you need it and all that jazz.
Sorry @Synchronicity. To be fair, the guy at the Apple Store asked if I wanted a new battery, but what I really wanted was to avoid thinking about my battery at all. This works for me.
No need to apologize to me! You asked for feedback and I gave you mine, but given everything you’ve said you’ve made the right choice for you given all your circumstances, including the tax write off.
Enjoy!
Give your impressions after using it in comparison to your old watch (minus battery).
One potential reason not to buy now (but perhaps get a new battery instead) is the Oxygen saturation sensor. Currently disabled in new watches because of a patent dispute, Apple apparently has a work-around which might take a hardware modification. This would be in (hopefully) the next generation watch.
I think I have Series 6 and it runs well, charging once per day. It seem to take forever to charge.
I don’t do much with it though- just the time (LOL!), the timer, the alarm, and the news. I love having one for the fall protection and in case of an emergency I can easily summon the police.
If I were to get a later model, I’d try to get a refurbished one if they sell them. But I think I’ll just keep the 6 for now.
This is only true in the US; in Canada, we still have the O2 sensor. But you’re not wrong!
Late to the game, but I also had to upgrade my Apple Watch. I planned for around 400€. In the end I went for a Series 8 stainless steel 45mm refurbished. I am too stingy to pay the full price for the steel ones and the ultra just looked too big. Also, I probably do not loose too much, if I resell if Series 10 is mind blowing.
So what happened to my beloved previous Apple Watch 6? Somehow the screen glue got loose and my display popped up (still working fine but I could see the watch internals). That happened a few months back in China as well. Then, a repair shop guy just glued it back together. Easy I thought. But this time back in I was at home. Since my battery was also run down, I ordered a new battery and went on to work on my watch. I successfully changed the battery and fancied myself to be an engineer. Then came the “easy part” of gluing it back together. My super glue did not have the precise needle to cover the frame in an exact manner. In fact, I used quite a bit too much and completely ruined my watch: crown and buttons are no longer usable. On top of that, I had the display slightly tilted. When putting the display straight, I broke a few lines of pixels.
So long story short: changing batteries is reasonably easy, but…
And
Reviving this thread to say that after today’s Apple event with no Ultra 3, I am glad I didn’t wait earlier this year!
