So excited to move up from a AW6 to a 10!!! Come on 9/20……does anybody else miss the release camaraderie? It was a party but guess those days are gone.

Am I crazy for thinking these watches are too big? Series 0 came in 38mm and 42mm, now the small option is 42mm. I’m a 6’2" 250lb guy and for the first time I’m thinking about the smaller option. I have the “large” size of everything, iPhone, MacBook Pro, iPad, and historically the larger watch.
Now I’m about ready to pull the trigger on the 42mm option and see how it goes.
What size did you both order?
The watche sizes really haven’t changed much, just the screen bezels. I’m a 5’10” 190lb guy and have never thought my 44mm S6 was too large
I’m looking forward to the Series 10! I almost got a 9 earlier year but decided to wait. I got the larger size as always; 42mm was a little small for me back when it was the big option.
I did offer to buy a friend’s Ultra this year because he kept loudly complaining about how he’d wasted his money trying an Apple Watch, but he didn’t want to part with it, haha.
When you folks get yours, can you share if the ticking second hand works on every analog face? I’m happily on the Ultra train but would probably upgrade for that feature alone, if it works everywhere.
Alumunium Black GPS with sport band.
Current one gets handed down to DD.
The size refers to the vertical dimension of the watch. They’ve each grown by 4mm in height and 3-4mm in width. Most dress watches come in 40-42mm.
Women’s watches are often 38mm or less. I’m really surprised Apple keeps pushing the size up.
Interesting topic. I’m conducting a little survey. Preliminary findings:
- the old small watch sizes had women who like smartwatches buying the large watch
- the new sizes make the small one a more obvious choice for some women
- athleticism is a bigger predictor of size preference than height/wrist
I had a discretionary health fund that needed using up by Aug 31 at my work, so I went up from the small AW to a large Series 9 thinking I would trade up to a 10, should I like the look of them. Decided to keep the large 9, as I have a very tiny wrist and the watch basically is the same size as my arm. I have had the small AWs since Series 0, and must say, I love the larger size. Anything bigger and I am pretty sure it would get banged up too much because of the overhang. Dig the new black Ultra, but going to spend that money saved on upgrading (hopefully) to an iPad Mini Pro, should such a thing manifest.
My wife likes the larger Watch and I like the smaller. She uses hers for reading texts and emails. I occasionally use mine for the same purposes but mostly use it for listening to music and tracking runs, neither of which require a larger watch face. There are many reasons for getting a larger watch or a smaller one.
My husband also likes the smaller one. Oddly, he says he likes to use it to “tell time”. Weirdo. Haha. edited to make it clear that I was only joking. I’m the wierdo because I really like the bigger screen size to twirl my Earth around in more detail.
It only seems to work on the new faces.
Went into a packed Apple Store to check out the Apple Watch 10 yesterday. I am still rocking a AW 4, stainless steel case with a stainless steel Milanese loop that still serves me well, but looking to upgrade since AW 4 is missing out on new functions.
Initially thought it makes sense to go to titanium and wanted to go for the “slate” case with the “slate” stainless steel Milanese loop for an all-black look, but compared to the jet black aluminium the case is only slightly shinier? The finish of the slate titanium vs the jet black aluminium - for the life of me it’s hard to tell the difference appearance-wise, but pricing-wise there is quite a gap. Even the Apple Store employees had trouble telling them apart. For someone who doesn’t need cellular and weight of the watch is not a huge issue, I wonder if I should just cheap out and buy the jet black aluminium?
I also looked at the new magnetic link bands and realized that they still use Finewoven! I guess Finewoven hasn’t really fully died after all! They look pretty nice all new but …
I have the black aluminum AW 9 and really like the finish. Personally, I don’t see the point in spending money upgrading the materials in disposable watches, which is what all smart watches are. If I were going to spend more on an AW, I’d get the Ultra for the extra features and battery life.
Years of owning an Apple Watch, and Apple’s insistence on only giving new faces generic face features (like night mode display or ticking second hands) remains the most bizarre thing about owning one. Guess I can cross this off my reasons to upgrade list. Thanks!
Apple probably started with sweep second hands because they’re found on mechanical watches, while the second hands of quartz analog watches jump between seconds. It’s an easy way to recognize a fake Rolex on someone’s wrist.
Has anyone gone from the old 44 mm to the new 42 mm? I’m considering it because due to the bezels the new 42 mm has the same display area as the old 44 mm?
