Changing Computer Name

In the past, I’ve never changed the name of my computer. It just has the default name like Paul’s MacBook. It seems my current one is Paul’s MacBook (4). Not sure how it got 4 at the end since I don’t think I ever had 3 previous computers.

Anyway, is it perfectly fine to simply go into System Preferences > Sharing and change the Computer Name to whatever I want? I assume I won’t run into issues changing the name but figured I would double check.

Thanks,

Paul

I always change mine and I’ve never had an issue.

Yep, that’ll do it. The (4) business is probably leftovers of past networking hiccups.

I’ve never had any issues doing so. Go for it!

If you have more than one computer on your network, “whatever you want” doesn’t include the name of another computer. The names must be unique.

And while you are at it, you can also change the name of your hard drive. Just select “Macintosh HD” and rename.

Renaming in this way is very easy. Just be sure on any other macs if you connect via a “whatever name”.local you update the name there.
