CleanMyMac... yes or no?

I used MailSteward. Good search capabilities, can re-import mail, and can be set to automatically back up on schedule. You could probably put the archive on an external disk.

I ran a 2018 Mac mini that way for a while. I purchased a base model and the internal storage was only 128GB so I moved my home folder to an external Samsung SSD. As I recall, the process took about 10 minutes after the data was copied.

home folder on an external SSD

bad idea, rather put the photos library on an external SSD (that’s what I do - it’s close to 400G and I have a 1T mbp) - samsung t7 shield 4 TB

i have another 2 TB T7 SSD with a magsafe ring on it for my iphone LOG recordings

reclaim any space or files that weren’t deleted properly.

that’s going to be really negligible. i haven’t tried the new version of cleanmymac (after the update) (i have it through setapp) but in the older version, it would try to delete very stupid things like additional language packs or caches of applications that they would obviously need. it’s a non-feature.

if you’d like to uninstall apps and make sure everything is gone, both raycast.app and appcleaner can do that.

Why is it an obviously stupid idea to delete additional language packs? Aren’t they only alternative localisations and help files for your default language?

I don’t speak German or Mandarin or US English, so the chances of my needing a menu item or a help file in any of those languages seems fairly remote. Is there something I’m missing about this?

Similarly with caches – they’re only there to speed up retrieval and sometimes it’s useful to trade disk space against the chance that some of the cache will need to be regenerated at some point. You don’t need to do it, but I don’t understand why it’s so obviously stupid to have the option.

Wondering why imazing needs to have the mobile device connected when the messages are on the Mac alrady if one switches on iCloud. Something of a waste to have to connect the mobile to extract messages that are already present.

Probably because it’s purely a utility for managing iOS devices.

I used it one time on my old iMac, probably 2-3 years ago; was easy to use and worked as expected - identified a bunch of stuff I could delete to save space. It may have been a free trial, I never paid for it on Mac but I do have a fully-unlocked version of CleanMyPhone that gets more regular use, especially for cleaning out my photo library (duplicates, blurry images, etc). As far as I know it’s still installed on my old iMac but as I got what I needed out of it the one time I used it I really haven’t thought about it since. You may see if there is still a trial version you can check out for free, run it once, may be all you need.

I’ve been using it since April on the recommendation of the “Proper Honest Tech” channel. I like it’s cleanup features. Maybe I should do some of it myself somehow, but I like it.

The issue I have encountered is with their various versions of CleanMyMac. I licensed “CleanMyMac X” in April and liked it - particularly its file “shredder” feature. I liked the interface too. In October they offered me a free “upgrade” to an interface that was slicker and seemed harder to use. Then this week I finally noticed that I lost functionality in the upgrade.

Getting answers an explanation from them about this has been frustrating. They don’t respond. I finally got a live agent on a chat, but she won’t answer my question about why I lost functionality, only that I did and that I can “downgrade” to the previous version if I like.

At the bottom of this page, you’ll also find that the App Store version is missing features: https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac-x/knowledgebase/editions. I did not buy the App Store version. Reading that page, it seems the “upgrade” they offered me is the App Version.

It’s one thing to have issues and questions, it’s another to lack support and explanations.

That was a weird update, wasn’t it? I thought it was some major new version or something, but the interface just got bigger, flashier, and more cartoon like. I didn’t notice any feature loss, but I barely use it. I only wanted if for the security stuff, but I am not sure I need a malware checker (I change my mind from year to year on that topic).

Were they a sponsor of Proper Honest Tech (I am not familiar with that channel)? I noticed that the only time I hear tech types talk about this app is when they are sponsor. Not that it is a bad app, just think it’s unneeded for anyone who knows their way around a Mac.

Yes. He is sponsored by “MacPaw”.

I got the best explanation from “Perplexity” when I finally asked it about it. I had searched around the web, and I had dug through emails from them. Perplexity basically said they are moving to a prescription model (which I already had) and that some unexplained features are supposedly are worth the upgrade. That’s more than I got from MacPaw directly.

When I finally got support on the “line” (text exchange), they had no explanation for the upgrade, but they did tell me I could downgrade and get the functionality I paid for, which I did gladly.

Now the app is telling me I have a free upgrade. Haha.

Hi, I have Clean My Mac. It comes with a subscription to SetApp. I run it every once in a while when I think of it. I’ve never have had any problem with it. I haven’t noticed anything missing or any weird interference. I feel good about running it. I’ve had it about three years.

The DaisyDisk app is your best friend for finding and deleting waste. Avoid those apps that promise to optimize your Mac, they might end up removing files that other apps need.

If you’re a seasoned Mac user, take a peek at all those “Daemon” folders on your Mac and carefully remove any old installation scripts.

I went to check my copy of CMM (lifetime price upgrade) and indeed, I don’t see the shredder function anymore. Strange move if you ask me… I have both versions CMM and CMM X side by side in the applications folder.

Finally a detailed explanation from MacPaw. I’ll be interested on this community’s opinions:

Hello,

Please note that the new CleanMyMac has less features because of Apple new rules and regulations with new macOS. Therefore, some features has to be removed.

The new CleanMyMac has some modern, eye-catching updates compared to the CleanMyMac X version. We also significantly overthought the user experience, intending to simplify it and provide even more ways for the new CleanMyMac to solve users’ issues and be helpful. The new version removes up to 27% more junk than the previous version.

What’s more, there are new features as well, such as:

We’re also working on future tools coming in 2025:

  • Space organization and Cleanup.
  • Advanced file search and management.
  • Photo, video, and screenshots cleanup.

In 2025, CleanMyMac will unveil new tools to help Mac users transform their digital environment. We will revamp Space Lens to visualize and manage storage effortlessly. We will also present new features to simplify file searches and organization and secure your private and sensitive data. My Clutter will be upgraded with Screenshots, Photos, and Video Junk to ensure a clutter-free experience on your Mac.

The MacPaw team stays true to its mission to befriend busy Mac users with technology, helping them stay on top of their digital lives, carefully organized by CleanMyMac.

Please also note these system requirements for CleanMyMac:

  • macOS 11+, 320 MB;
  • Minimum display size: width 1280 pixels, height 800 pixels.

The new version adapts to the new macOS updates. Which is why it is suggested for customers with MacOS 11+ to upgrade.

My opinion? Smart Care, Health Assistant (and battery monitor, not sure tho but I think it was in the menubar assistant) was already there in the previous version Clean My Mac X. Duplicate Finder? Sure…

Tools they say that are coming in 2025 include Space organization and Cleanup, I don’t see a difference then space cleanup from the previous versions. But we have to see what they will do with it.

And ’ CleanMyMac has less features because of Apple new rules and regulations with new macOS. Therefore, some features has to be removed.’ is ofcourse a BS argument, because Clean My Mac X’s function for example shredding files still works (MacPaw themselves suggest downgrading to CMM X if you need that feature.

So I read a lot of non-saying points and argumentation. :man_shrugging:t2:

Without an actual detailed explanation, I call BS on this. And as @Swifferdusterrr noted, the old version still works, so?
