Cotypist is launching but

Predict your words - Cotypist is launching this Wed and it’s a pricey subscription for the app. I have been testing it over a year. It’s a great app and I wish success. Hopefully the free mode might be sufficient for me. Time will tell.

It’s a great app, but that subscription pricing is absurd.
There are no server side costs as it’s all done on local models, something around the third of the cost would make me think about subscribing.
As it stands I suspect much cheaper alternatives will be available soon.

Agreed. The subscription pricing is too rich for my blood.

I might just trigger Superwhisper, MacWhisper dictation at this price point.

The models still have to be trained on an ongoing basis though I assume and/or procured by the developer for their customers to use locally.

Such a cool app. It’s worth it, for me, so I have subscribed to the mid-level plan.

Funnily enough, I’m feeling a little buyers remorse. The mid-level plan only works on 1 machine, and I occasionally use another one. I’d have to pay a lot more money to do that, and it’s not worth it.

I’ve emailed the developer and suggested he just have 1 paid plan.

No, the models are open source, free of cost.

I think it is a good app, but I agree for something that is using open source models locally, this seems expensive. I am going to have to consider whether it is useful enough… I have 3 different machines, so I’d be forced into the highest tier.

I’m not sure that’s true. Yes, the developer has discovered a new product category, but (having watched him build the app for a long time now), I don’t think it’ll be easy to replicate. The AI isn’t the clever bit. He’s had to tackle a load of fiddly and finicky edge cases to make it look and feel seamless. The hard work is hidden because he’s done such a good job.

I know it feels absurd, but a couple of dollars a week to turbo-charge your writing? That’s a bargain if you do a lot of writing (or, don’t do a lot of writing, but should!).

I think the dev is going to get a bunch of money year 1, then the open source alternatives will become viable enough and people will switch

With 3 Macs I will be in the pro tier. I don’t think it’s for me. I am hoping that Raycast will implement this feature pretty soon.

For me due to the lack of $ to £ exchange rate, it’s closer to $4 a week.

There’s already this GitHub - FuJacob/tabby: tabby is local AI autocomplete for your entire Mac. Open source. On device. Everywhere you type. · GitHub which, whilst rough around the edges, is promising.

Am I reading something wrong? The pro version of Cotypist is $9 per month. Wispr Flow is $12. In my opinion that is about right for these AI assistants. I’m getting a lot of value from Cotypist, more than from Wispr. I work in an environment where talking to a computer is not a good idea. Cotypist is a better fit for me.

I’m also thinking about this… I’ve been enjoying Cotypist, but I also agree this is more expensive than I expected. And worse, the limit to 1 mac at the middle tier is just wrong imho.

Keep in mind the discount is just for the first year. No grandfathering for those who participated in the Beta and/or initial launch.

My stats show that I’m going above the free limit over the time I’ve been using it but the two machine price is too much for me. I’m sticking with free for now and try turning it off in a few apps where it’s less useful.

The difference between Wispr Flow and Cotypist is, that Wispr Flow generates AI costs for the developers, because it is a cloud service in that regard. Cotypist runs locally, but is priced like a service with an expensive cloud infrastructure.

The developer will lose some sales to people who think the cost should reflect his business’s running costs.

But, he’s not chasing that market.

He’s built a productivity tool that saves people time, and (maybe) makes them more money.

People who care about that stuff will find it easier to pay what - to the others - seems like a lot of money.

For them, paying $2 a week is trivial if it saves them a couple of hours a week.

We’re all wired differently, and have different preferences.

I have two Macs so will need to go for the Pro tier. I am mulling it over but will probably subscribe for the monthly plan and see what happens in this space over the next few months.

I suspect that in 6 months time there will be other apps that do this and probably some of the existing ones will add the type-ahead functionality.

There must be a future for a combined type-ahead and dictation app, accessing the same library of models. A hybrid of Superwhisper and Cotypist at a sensible price, able to be used across all your devices would be a compelling proposition.
