Thanks. Good to know!
Have you tried indexing in DEVONthink?
Everything you mention here works if you index a folder instead of import it. Even the tags sync!
Not a bad idea, and definitely something for me to work on. My question: If I just create a file in an indexed folder, does DT pick it up? Or do I have to do something manually for DT to realize something has been added to (or deleted from) an indexed folder?
Also: how does DTTG handle indexed folders?
Yes, DT reflects all changes (but it works both ways, so if you delete it in DT, the file is also removed from the folder).
DTTG just syncs the database to reflect the state of DT on Mac.
Yep. I’ve always used indexing, and it’s even gotten better with DT3.
I use it more like a backup. A lot of my documents have tons of versions and it got messy when I needed to find sth. quickly. So I index my working folders and import final or important versions of files into a separate database that’s built according to the P.A.R.A. method. I then use these files as links to my other apps. It all comes together in Bear, where every project has its “brain” with links to DT, Things, InkDrop, meeting notes, next steps and important specific resources.
But since its a rather new workflow for me I am still figuring it out
If you’ve been on the fence about version 3, their Black Friday pricing is 25% off, including upgrades and additional seats.
As a followup, I went to KeepIt for other reasons, and the sync was atrocious!!! I do really exaggerate, but it was relatively unusable going between Mac, iPad, and phone - as I do so constantly throughout the day.
Keep It’s sync seems like it is most of what you’re paying for with the subscription, and I found it to be unreliable too.
FSNotes iOS/macOS keeps getting better, it uses the standard TextBundle containers, and being open source (as well as validated in the app stores) means it has the potential to last even if the main devs disappear.
Notebooks iOS/macOS/Windows seems to me the best alternative to Keep It! and it utilizes Dropbox for sync, and explains why they found iCloud sync unsatisfactory
I’m slow to migrate to new apps (even if I own them as I do with the above apps) but I could see this being my main cross-platform alternative, even if it means dealing with Dropbox, which I’ve been trying to get away from.
I gave FSNotes a try again a couple weeks ago. I still find that it crashes so often for me on iOS that it’s unusable.
They’ve come out with three updates in the last week(!) so hopefully any issues you had were addressed.
