EagleFiler Tips

I don’t mean downloading the complete NYTimes website. I meant that if I want to save an article of interest, I hope EagleFiler would save the whole article, so if one day I did not subscribe to NYT, I’d still be able to read the article that was locked behind paywall.

I’ve found Reader mode frequently allows me to view articles behind soft paywalls. When that works you could use cmd + P to bring up the print menu then select “Save PDF to EagleFiler” from the PDF pulldown.

I usually just print the PDFs in a folder and file them later.

Thanks. I’ll try that.
I’ll also download the bookmarklet to see if that feature exists (I’m currently a subscriber to NYT, so I don’t need to do Reader View but Save as PDF is good!)

Assuming I am a diehard long-term Devonthink user with no chance I will stop using it… what if any features/capabilities does EagleFile have that might make it usefu in addition to Devonthink?

If you’re happy with Devonthink I’m not sure you would gain much by including EF in the mix.

I like it because it’s relatively lightweight, well connected with the file system and inexpensive (although I also have an unused copy of DT).

It was worth the money for me. I use it regularly. If you have not already, you should read @nationalinterest post about its capabilities here

Thanks for the link.

I think that I’ll start with EF to manage my Canon Scanner pdf files, mainly because I like how fast it indexes the contents of the pdf.

Now, if it will also save web articles especially those that was behind paywall, it will be a good system for me. I tried the bookmarklet and also Cmd-P - Save as PDF in EagleFiler but unfortunately, the contents were cropped at the margin. Probably not realistic for me to expect EF to do this.

I have a usecase now that I am exploring.
I use Photo.app for photos and SnagIt for screenshot. Sometimes I want to file them as a project - for example, attending an event and using iPhone camera to capture the presentation chart on the screen and then, adding the charts that I capture in another Zoom meeting. All from the same project.

EF made this easy. Drag and drop from SnagIt into EF will auto convert .snagx files into .png. Similarly, drag and drop from Photos.app will convert .heic into .jpeg. And I can group them into folders in EF. That’s pretty useful to me.

One caveat - some how, when it comes to photos, not PDF, there is no OCR. I can search for a word in Photos.app and it will highlight the photos with the word. EF can’t do

Many Web page will display differently when printed. For importing pages behind a paywall, you’ll probably get the most faithful results by saving a Web archive file or by using EagleFiler’s service hotkey to save a Web archive from the selected part of the page.

This is something I hope to address in a future version.
