Today was the big day:
Just waiting for Karabiner to release its beta.
Big Sur is much more stable and reliable than Catalina was on my MacBook Pro. I have not had a single episode of system level crash/panic.
That’s fantastic.
There’s a beta of Karabiner-Elements out that should work fine once we get the next public beta.
All of my apps seem to work, with two exceptions:
Rogue Amoeba’s apps currently do not work on Big Sur and there are no betas that I am aware of. That’s not surprising, as they tend to break with most macOS versions, but I have no doubt they will eventually work.
It is currently impossible to clone a Big Sur boot drive. This is a huge problem, and I am concerned that Apple’s intervention is required to fix this, but I do not feel confident that they will have a fix before the official release of Big Sur.
My concern is similar to Apple’s failure to document APFS sufficiently for tools like Disk Warrior and others to work with the new format. APFS has been around for several years, but Apple has made almost no progress towards making this better.
If Apple believes that making bootable clones is a niche case and thinks that Time Machine is enough, I’m going to drive to California and push Apple’s entire leadership team down a flight of stairs.
That’s good to hear. My iMac is currently still on Mojave. I have a feeling it may end up skipping Catalina and making the jump straight to Big Sur.
Unfortunately, my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro (currently on Catalina) will not be getting Big Sur. That may end up being a significant factor in my deciding to replace it (come on, Apple Silicon laptops!)
How is Big Sur going? Beta 10 just came out.
For me it’s going great, and better than Catalina was. It has been very stable.
The only problem is that Rogue Amoeba’s apps are not compatible.
yeah I just checked that too because they’re pretty essential to my Zoom workflow…
Messages is still quite broken, as is maps. The rest seems to be ok.
I have slowdown here and there, though.
What issues are you having with Messages and Maps?
Just curious because they seem to be working OK here, unless I’ve overlooked something.
Messages: when you start writing the name of the recipient of your message, you get auto complete suggestions, the most likely highlighted. When you press enter, instead of picking that option, all you wrote in the field gets erased. You have to pick the auto complete suggestion with the mouse cursor. Super annoying, especially when writing multiple recipients and you forget that with the last name…
Don’t have my Mac with me right now, but will check maps tomorrow.
Ok, checked Maps and havn’t found any problems besides general lagginess but I remember that something drove me mad after switching to Big Sur here…
I’ve been having issues with the hidden Catalina menubar not showing when i move the cursor to the top edge. Hoping that Big Sur will finally fix this!
