Has Gruber Given up on his job?

I always looked forward to reading the Daring Fireball review of the new iPhones. So when I read this post on 9/19, I thought I’d give him some time to work on whatever personal issues he was dealing with. So now a month later, I check out the site and see he’s written a lot of nonsense on politics and even done a Talk Show episode, but still hasn’t published an iPhone review??!! To quote Office Space “What would you say you do here?”

Gruber’s job is to blog, and as you note, that’s what he’s been doing.

So, no.

I think that doing a review takes a lot of time and those personal issues could have had something to do with it.

His Job isn’t necessarily to review iPhones. if he’s got nothing to say why would he post.

And beyond anything else, John’s never been the most timely of people. it wouldn’t surprise me to see his thoughts months after he got hands on a device.

His job is to blog. Looking over what he’s written about politics, I’m curious to know which parts you think are “nonsense.”

Welcome Robert

I agree. And I think others have already published “a couple” of iPhone 17 reviews. :grinning:

I’d guess that some light writing or link sharing is a comfortable habit and is part of his process for longer pieces.

While I am generally aligned with what Gruber posts in terms of politics, it should not necessarily be the case for all the readers. But beyond that, I personally find it is somewhat clashing with his traditional Apple centric posts. If I wanted to read about US politics from a progressive standpoint I’d go to Politico or Jacobin, not Daring Fireball. But after all, it’s his platform and he can do whatever he likes with it. And anybody is free to unfollow his feed of course.

This is basically my position on this stuff as well.

I go to tech news sites to read tech news. Sometimes that intersects with politics, because it’s inevitable. If it gets too political, I tend to unfollow. FWIW, I don’t think Gruber is there yet.

But I’ve seen app developers, tech journalists, and podcasters take very definite “this is what I believe, and if you don’t agree with me, you’re the problem” sorts of stances. And I just don’t see why it has to be that way.

We don’t get any benefit from compartmentalizing every piece of life into political silos. I would wager that nobody is reading/listening to most of the aforementioned devs/journalists/podcasters and changing their mind, especially the ones that have been intentionally driving away people that don’t agree with them for years.

Either way, I really hope that whatever is going on with Gruber’s personal life, he’s able to sort it out. He’ll survive missing one year’s iPhone review.

He’s said on a podcast that there will be a review, he doesn’t know when. His family issue is complex and ongoing, is essentially how he put it.

I think these are unprecedented times; politics will of necessity, in a time like this, affect our lives in broader ways.

Right, this is what I mean. I don’t go to Daring Fireball for political commentary. He’s not particularly insightful or unique in any way. He IS insightful when it comes to technology and Apple. If he chooses to not write about iPhones anymore, that is his right. I will also stop paying attention as is my right. I just don’t want that to happen because I value his opinion on Apple products.

Ignore him? (Unfollow his socials, RSS feed, etc.)

That’s what I started doing some time ago (after all his stupid takes on the EU and some other political posts that “lacked insight”).

I agree, I find his views on the EU and DMA to be very one sided and/or short sighted.

You obviously don’t like his politics; Many of us do.

But let’s try to keep politics out of the MPU forums.
