Hit the Wrong Keys and Discovered a Keyboard Shortcut - Tips

I was merrily typing away when I hit a wrong combination of keys. Suddenly, a Tips window appeared related to the application I was in. I tried it with several applications, including third-party applications (Drafts, MindNode). When the keyboard shortcut is invoked, user guides appear.

The shortcut is Command+Shift+?

Many, or most of you may already be aware of this, but for those who may not be, I’m passing this along.

I see it bringing up the Help menu in the Menu Bar. No tips. I wonder if you have some utility that is doing tips?

I run no utilities. When I hit that key combination while in Safari I get this:

Same.

What version of macOS are you running @Bmosbacker?

I looked in the Tips app, to see if did something like that, but don’t see anything. :man_shrugging:

I get this:

then if I click on Safari Help I get what you see.
This is a (default, I guess) setting in Keyboard Shortcuts:

Because that menu item is different in each app, because it includes the app name, it appears that a shortcut entry would be needed for each individual app to have it do what you are seeing.

That is not what I’m experiencing. Whenever I hit that keyboard, shortcut combination, regardless of the app that I have tried, the user guides come up. I’m using the latest version of Sequoia.

I’m writing the latest version of Sequoia. I don’t know why it’s working on my MacBook Pro, but whenever I hit that keyboard combination, user guide guides appear even in third-party apps.

This probably is just one of those weird little macOS flukes, but I am slightly curious as to why.

Under keyboard shortcuts do you have anything set for this combo:

I am out of the office at the moment without my MacBook. I’ll check as soon as I return to my office. I’m curious too. :slightly_smiling_face:

That, or “I’m special.” :wink::joy:

If there’s a way to use QuickTime to record my screen, and it show my keyboard combination, I would be happy to make a short recording and share it via a Dropbox. Is there a way for QuickTime to record my keyboard strokes?

I get the same as you. See last item in documents section.

shift-command-/(?) opens this when invoked in the finder:

I am sure you could do with a third party software solution, but that isn’t really necessary. I don’t think anyone doubts you, but obviously there is a bug or something is overriding the default action for that combo on your machine.

My Mac decided to start Universal Control up with another Mac and change my wallpaper today. Sometimes computers act funny (especially new versions of macOS).

There is a new app in Sequoia, “Tips”.

I’m still on macOS 14.x so I cannot investigate further.

As with others on this thread, ⌘⇧/ opens the help menu.

This must be partially the reason, because when I involve that keyboard combination (I’m running Sequoia 15.1.1), when in Mail, I get this:

The Tips app opens even when not running in the background. I’m not surprised that tips for Apple apps would open. I am surprised that tips for third-party apps open. But for third-party apps, you are taken to the User Guide on the developer’s website.

This could prove handy.

I opened Tips to see if I could find a setting to make it do this, and couldn’t find anything though. Even if I have the Tips open, I still get the default help menu with this keyboard combo.

Maybe, but I have never found any help from those these guides (at least the Apple ones), they tend to be the very basic stuff for people who have never used a Mac before. For non-Apple apps, the majority of mine do not have a guide it appears.

In my opinion (not that anyone is asking) the universal combo of “Control - ,” that opens preferences for any app is very handy. That’s why I hate Electron apps that don’t support it.

I get the same thing on my Sequoia Macs - with cmd+?, Apple’s first party apps are opening the app’s section of the Mac User Guide (Tips app) instead of classic help.

Some renamed the Help menu to Mac User Guide and some, like Pages, still say Help next to the shortcut.
