OTOH we have bookshelves in the bathroom specifically so you can sit and read as desired. And re the phone use in the bathroom. I can tell no one else here is a farmer. Seriously, a little bit of human excreta is the LEAST of my worries in terms of contamination. Besides, in actual terms, urine, for example, is basically sterile as it exits the body and can be used to wash your hands and face in. It’s safer than the water in many places. I remember from college days years ago watching a movie as part of an anthropology course where the goat, sheep or even human urine was used to wash with since water was so scarce.
There are reasons that one hand is used for shaking and one for dealing with excreta in ancient and some modern cultures. But Americans in general are far more squeamish than is reasonable in terms of actual risks.
The key is knowing when it’s an issue and when it is not. We had a sheep die and based on the gross observation of the body I made sure no one touched the animal or any excreta, we moved all other animals away and called the state vet, who suited up in full biohazard gear and then did an exam. The result was not what I feared and all was well other than the dead sheep but that comes from knowing when things are potentially an issue and when it’s just the unfortunate problem of a dead sheep.
I am not currently a farmer, but I spent nearly a decade on the farm. I’ve been up to my knees in manure. I’ve cleaned out stalls, castrated bulls, used outhouses on my grandparents’ farm, which in the winter is a terrible experience , had my arm up the back end of cows, and more. I am not squeamish and not a germaphobe. That said, general hygiene is a good practice. To each his own, but I prefer not to have the feces of others on my hands.
And I prefer to keep reading material clean, physically and metaphorically. As to books in the bathroom, we don’t have them in our bathrooms. All reading material is in the study. We prefer to keep human excrement and reading material separate.
I tend to read any and everywhere on phone, iPad or physical books. There isn’t a room in the house that doesn’t have books or magazines in it. Floor to ceiling built in bookshelves in nearly every room. All full unfortunately. Which is why I’ve gone to mostly ebooks and avail on all my devices.
I’m always on desktop, and loo is the ONLY time I use my phone. If my phone is with kids, I’ll take Kindle or a book. If I have nothing, I just meditate.
I don’t think it’s addiction, it’s more about avoiding boredom.
