iCloud Photos and Files backup - Parachute App

No reason in particular - I just have not had the time to properly look into Synology Photos yet. I did try it once, many years ago (under the name PhotoStation?), but my old Synology was simply too slow to run it.

I do have a lot of RAW files, and I seem to recall that Photos might not be able to properly display these. My main collection is 20+ years worth of photos in a Lightroom catalog. It still works in read-only/view mode after I decided not to renew my subscription this year. (Hiking the price to more than double was a dick move that got me quite cross.)

I am also using NeoFinder a bit, so will decide later if I’ll keep LR around in read-only or re-catlog my photos in a different tool.

What price are you discussing? synology photos is free. There mobile app is pretty darn good, and shared albums work well for my family. Also they have an Apple TV app which is how we usually playback videos (yes it uploads videos to Synology photos) and pictures. Does background upload and also able to then easily free up space on phone from Synology app for the pictures and videos uploaded.

Sorry if I was unclear - I was referring to the price of Adobe’s “Photographers Plan” that includes Photoshop and Lightroom. It more than doubled this year.

That makes more sense. Definitely not a Lightroom replacement. The previous photo station was likely closer to what you would like, the new photos is much more “family approved” and does a good job of managing multiple uploads from multiple devices and allowing shared libraries.

Synology photos vs parachute is a closer comparison, I’m not sure parachute/syno photos is in the ballpark of Lightroom

Agree, Lightroom is a tool for enthusiast and professional photographers. It’s excellent for managing large libraries and editing RAW images.

As my volume of DSLR photos has sharply declined with the increased quality and convenience of the iPhone Pro, Lightroom has become less important to me. I still might need to reference and find old photos, so having that capability in the catalog view is nice. For editing these days I either use Affinity Photo or DxO PureRaw.

Any further experiences with this, positive or negative? I backup 3 photo libraries (mine, which is the family’s main one, my wife’s, and my daughter’s). My daughter (teen, just left home for 1st year of college) has a RAPIDLY growing photo library (shocking, I know). Being able to back up her photo library onto a large HDD without needing to have the room to download the entire library would be fantastic.

Any issues? Still going smoothly for folks?

Thanks!

Just chugging along quietly in the background, makes no fuzz. Guess the first real test will be on a day I need to restore anything

Has anyone used parachute and “photosync” to compare. Photosync allows custom folder structure on image backup with parachute is lacking. Also Photosync allows easy view to see what is/isn’t backed up to clear phone storage, not sure if parachute does that or not.

Just wondered how they compare.
