iMessage - Stop New App from Appearing in Drawer?

I have found various older posts from ~2016 about stopping this behavior in earlier (pre-iOS 12) versions, but cannot seem to shut off this obnoxious behavior in iOS 12… Am I missing a setting?

Relatedly, the flow for adding pictures to iMessage is a definite step back in iOS 12, I don’t want snapchat and going to the hard to use app drawer instead of the camera is frustrating.

Yeah I’m not talking about hiding the drawer, I’m talking about them adding each [adjective] app that has messaging to the drawer… Seems like it isn’t possible to stop anymore and was in iOS 11.

The way to add photos is just awful agree…
