To what extent is Emacs able to export and/or import Word .docx files including formatting?

I tend to use pandoc and have had no problems, but my docx files tend not to have images. The rest is pretty well formatted. I use org files so mine convert to org. Pandoc can then convert back should you need to do so.

Invariably there is always some going through and formatting needed, but I tend to convert a doc to work on so that’s not a problem for me.

I converted a 20 page safeguarding docx and it converted almost instantly and formatting was minor.
