iOS 18.2 will win me back to Apple’s Mail app – if it gets this thing right

I kinda like that Categories, to be honest. It’s very much like how modern Gmail is. What I don’t like is that it “group” the same sender, for instance I have two emails from “ABC Eateries”. The new Mail will show one line ABC Eateries with an unread mark. I tap on it and it bring me to the first unread. But, if I have another unread, I can’t tell unless I scroll down. That’s not good!

Probably going to turn the categories off. I don’t like Gmail version of it and I don’t like this. I have my own categories (folders) where I move things with rules.

The summaries I have found largely pointless. I guess they are accurate, but I really don’t need them. I know the latest bill from my ISP is a bill for my internet service, no summary needed.

All that said, I am not a heavy email user for home use, but even if this was on my work email, they would be of no use to me.

Oh, it looks to me like those Categories could be some sort of label. I mean, if it’s a label or flag, that’s fine by me especially in the Mac where we can create Smart Folders. That’s additional power to the users.

I wish that Apple can display the company logo for the sender instead of just a character. Maybe, that’s also an indication of things to come.

One reason I like the default mail app is that it leaves my mail alone. So I turned the categories off, but I am happy they are showing they care about the app. I have never been able to ween myself off of the first way I used e-mail. Delete them or store in a folder with a strict folder structure. I have a gmail account which is mostly junk, but the search is nice. Just not sure I could use that for my important stuff.

Apple Mail still does not let you tag mails with multiple tags. Each Mail has to be put in one folder…like in 1999.

I despise that Snoozing / Reminder does not remove email from inbox until the reminder date / time.

To enable swipe to delete, you have to go deeep into Settings to enable this feature.

Every time I try Apple Mail, I just get frustrated and go back to Spark. Same with Safari.

Is clicking on the Archive button that much friction? Originally Apple Mail did not allow archiving without losing the reminder. However that has been changed for quite a while now.

Agreed. Just give me my emails in an inbox. I’ll sort them out myself, and I’m smart enough to know if something is important or if it’s a promotion, thank you very much.

For an org like Apple that is obsessed with UX, it seems pretty clunky to make this a two/three step interaction - first select Reminder (their version of Snooze) to set the reminder time/date and then have to go find/hit the Archive button (which isn’t even in the fixed action icons at the bottom of the iOS screen) - when other email clients (Spark, Edison Mail, Gmail iOS App, etc.) handle it all in one interaction.
