iOS: you can now block ads, trackers and other "malware" in 3rd party Apps

Ads in Maps, and other services, etc. aren’t going away. But support for iOS 26.4 will. AFAIK the only alternative to ads in free maps is a subscription service like Sygic

I personally switched to GrapheneOS. Much better in terms of privacy and security.

No Google account required.

Don’t try to verify your age at Sony then, or you will be “reported to the authorities:person_facepalming:

Thanks for this - instant subscribe, even though I hate subs.

I just brought it outright. Done, no subs.

Subscribe? Yikes. I’m out.

I’ll stick with pi-hole.

That DNS based solution can only filter on domains; not on on full URLs.

(But it might be good enough; I use NextDNS, which is also DNS based, myself)

Has anyone here been using Filtr and seen benefits in 3rd party apps? I bought Wipr last night especially since it was inexpensive and it worked across all my devices. I’ve tried other things before but this just seems so much easier.

Curious of common scenarios that I could test. (I don’t sub to Apple News.)

I have, can confirm no adds in Fotmob (football live score app). And some others, too.

That’s odd — when I subscribed to Apple News, I still saw ads. Maybe it’s different now?

I was referring to Wipr. It is an inexpensive subscription and my experience thus far, it excellent. I also run NextDNS. With those two, I seldom see ads in Apple News or elsewhere.

@pkondo Yes filtr blocks ads in 3rd party apps. I was a beta tester and recommend it 100%, best $5 a year I’ve ever spent, and the developer is very responsive.

I should rephrase. I’m wondering what specific cases I could see how it’s blocking ads in 3rd party apps. Basically, before I tell my friends they should consider it, I want to give them some use cases.

Does no one use 1Blocker anymore? It was a favourite at one point in time and I continue to subscribe to them. They do block ads in 3rd party apps too, by implementing a ‘firewall’ in the iPhone. I don’t have Apple News, so I can’t really vouch but I do have wsj and nytimes and both apps do not show their ads when I am on 1Blocker.

I still use 1Blocker. I’ve been paying them $5/year for a long time. It’s been awhile since I’ve touched the customizations, but I appreciated that aspect of it. Wipr is nice, too, and they work well together.

I would expect to see ads and surveillance cookies only when they are hosted on the same domain as you are visiting, right? (Which currently would be very few.)

I swear the tech industry is going to turn me into a Luddite. Grrrrrr…
