iPhone backup to iTunes

I have been doing my iPhone backup to iTunes but now it has gotten too large and its taking up a boat load of space on my Mac’s drive. I know how to change the iCloud backup not to back different things up (like podcasts that I can download again). But I don’t see a way to do that with iTunes. Am I missing something?

One thought - it’s possible to have several historical backups saved in iTunes without realizing it. They are not incremental - each backup is a full device backup. (So if you have 12GB of data on your phone during backup #1, and 12GB of data on your phone during backup #2, the sum total of the backups is 24GB–not 12GB + the small changes.)
