Well… I guess the title says it all. I’d like to connect my 1080p display to my 5k iMac. What are your experiences? Does one really need Apple’s expensive adapter or will it work with a cheap one bought on Amazon?

No need to buy the Apple adapter. I like buying cables with the right connectors. I can’t guarantee this will 100% work but it’s what I would buy/try in your situation.

I paid $26.00 for my cable at an Apple authorized retailer, it is 300 miles to the nearest Apple Store. My local shop is awesome. If I recall it is a Belkin cable.
