It depends on whether you have to exchange documents with others. For making personal documents, I have no problem with Libre Office or iWorks; both of them offer more than enough granularity to format the document. But at work, it’s as imporant (if not more important) to let others see the document as how it’s displayed on your computer. As such, I have to pay MS for the compatibility tax no matter how I personally loath to use their unwieldy pieces of software.
