Limit charging of 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14" to 80% following ATP suggestion

during the last ATP episode, they were talking about a setting to limit the charging of the MacBook Pro battery to 80% when plugegd in. Where can I fint this setting? Option - Battery Menu Item click does not show it?

Am I missing something here?

I think they were referring to Optimized battery charging in System Settings>Battery>Battery, which says:

To reduce battery aging, your Mac learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it on battery.

So if you have that option enabled and your MBP is charged past 80%, I would guess that is based on what the Mac has “learned” about your routine. Also, if it is capped at 80%, I believe there would be an option to fully charge by clicking on the battery in the menubar. I can’t test either of things because I’m at 100% even though I have Optimized battery charging enabled :man_shrugging:

Here is the link to a related twitter post from ATP:

Yes - they were talking about the Optimized Battery Charging as well - but this does not work f the notebook is for some length of time (days) permanently connected to power (as via a hub). And aparently, there is a setting to charge it only to 80%?
I hope that I understood this correctly, because the option of AlDente ( sounds a bit hacky to me.

Previous discussion:

Yup - I want to leave it to Apple - that is why I am looking for that setting (which, it seems, does not exist) and do not want to use e.g. AlDente.

The setting that Apple recommends is ‘Optimized Battery Charging’. I too would rather not use Al Dente.

I’ve been using Optimized Battery Charging 2.5 months now, and I can’t tell whether it has adapted to my usage. During the Omicron phase of Covid I’ve been using the laptop off battery for short spells of an 1 or so, never more than 2.5 hours in a day. The ‘algorithm’ is nearly always charging to 100%, if not immediately when plugged in, then always at night. It would be great if there was actual data showing that Apple’s current algorithm is adapting to battery usage in a smart way that would increase battery longevity. I know Apple engineers are smarter than me, but I would like to see some evidence anyway.

I routinely use my M1 MacBook Air on battery. I have audible battery level announcements turned on so when it’s recharging I’ve been able to reliably unplug the wall charger when the battery reaches 80% charge. I’ve been doing this for some time now. On the few occasions where I miss the 80% announcement, the battery keeps right on charging all the way to 100%. As far as I can tell, my Mac hasn’t learned a darn thing from my battery habits.

what about ipad like the one with M1 chip, it is just as expensive as a Mac these days !!
