I like to use Drafts on iOS to send emails without opening my email application to avoid getting sucked into the email abyss when I’m doing deep work. Until Drafts comes out with a Mac version–hurry!–is there an alternative I can use on the Mac?

You could use Automator to create a service that creates a new message with the currently selected text as the message body. You could then use any text editor you want to compose the message. The caveat here is that the service will start mail if you don’t already have it open. If your goal is to not open mail at all, that won’t do it.
The service only needs one action: New Mail Message. That action uses selected text by default.
