Gab is not only filled with Nazis, but because of the torrent of hate speech on the site PayPal, Stripe and other sites have or are banning it, and it remains financially afloat only with $6/month pro accounts and requests for $250 ‘investments’ and an attempt to ICO their own cryptocurrency. I think there are much better alternatives to consider.

Facebook and Instagram are where everybody is. Unless your friends are committed to trying something new with you, I think you are going to find this difficult. Also, @bbech makes a great point: if it’s free, you are likely providing revenue to the company through harvest of your personal data.
