Mac mini security

OK lets take this one step back.
Is this Mini only serving a local network or is it also accessible from the internet?
For example do people remotely connect to it to access files?

I understand that, what I didn’t understand (and still don’t) is why disabling upnp makes it hard for a server to talk to the internet. I thought upnp was a lan (not wan) protocol.

It doesn’t. Has nothing to do with a server connecting to the internet. It only allows clients to establish inbound connections to the server by modifying port forwarding rules.
