Using App Cleaner & Uninstaller by Nektony. Its primary feature is to uninstall applications, but I’d like to say that it has an update feature, which is pretty solid. It helps me manage hundreds of apps I have on my Mac.
Oh, completely forgot about that one… (I’m using it for cleaning up app data of removed apps).
It found an update that no other app reported: Spotify 1.2.78.418 → 1.2.79.425
OTOH It did not report the CleanShot X 4.8.6 → 4.8.7 update that Updatest just reported.
I also use this one (on the command line):
-
These should be separate entries in Updatest, you should see two apps (one for each) and both would be supported if they have a source to detect.
-
I’d ignore these apps as Updatest likely will not find an update for them any time soon.
-
Yes. I need to handle this better in future updates for sure.
Have been leaving the search for a macupdater replacement to the last minute and think im going to give updatest a try. Will report back after the free trial runs out (12 days).
As of a few weeks ago this is back in brew.
However:
✔︎ JSON API formula.jws.json [Downloaded 32.1MB/ 32.1MB]
✔︎ JSON API cask.jws.json [Downloaded 14.7MB/ 14.7MB]
Warning: dosbox-x-app has been deprecated because it does not pass the macOS Gatekeeper check! It will be disabled on 2026-09-01.
Or am I using the wrong formula? Which one do you use?
Just brew install dosbox-x
https://formulae.brew.sh/formula/dosbox-x
Now that you mention it I did see the same message as you and transitioned to this other formula.
I guess I’m going re-enable “check for updates” in each of my applications, one by one.
May MacUpdater rest in piece. They were the GOAT until the very last day. I mean, look at this update in the news feed!
It’s not 2026 yet, but… ![]()
3.5.0 (Jan 2026):
• Unfortunately MacUpdater 3’s promised lifetime of “until 2026-01-01” is now over
• This is the last and final update to MacUpdater 3
• There will be no MacUpdater 4 or any continuation of the MacUpdater product from us
• Our daily maintainance has been stopped and we don’t verify updates anymore
• You can keep using this unsupported version for as long as you wish
• This version is free-to-use for everyone including “Pro” features
• The database server will be kept running until 2026-12-31
I’ll probably switch to Updatest.
After trying Updatest and Latest for a while I decided to just not use an auto update anymore. I found both lacking significantly compared to Mac Updater, and I realized that most apps I use frequently have built-in update checks, and for the other ones I’m not sure I care enough.
What do they lack which is essential to you?
I submitted a handful of feature requests and bug reports to Updatest and they’ve all been resolved! Impressive.
This is totally okay. App Updaters aren’t for everyone. Honestly for me, even if someone uses Updatest for it’s 14 day free trial, learns all the cool brew tricks and decides “I don’t need a GUI for this” it’s a win for me.
I want everyone on Homebrew where they can be, and if it makes sense for them. ![]()
Not lacking in features but scope. Routinely only found somewhere near half the updates MU did. Updatest performed better than Latest.
As the author of Updatest very nicely described in one of his excellent write-ups, the price for that completeness is probably what doomed MU.
I love your whole attitude around this topic and sincerely hope you’re successful with this app (however you define “success”). The world would be a better place with more people like you.
Honestly, I’ve said this in a few other spots but I don’t mind repeating it.
I built Updatest for me, I never planned on “selling” it (back when it was originally Caskly) and it was really just a tool for me to solve a niche problem I had. I saw MacUpdater going away and understood there’d be a support burden I’d have to do if I released this app, so I picked a pricing strategy that made sense and didn’t price people out.
I actually had no idea anyone would want to use the app, let alone how many of you folks do now! I thought maybe a handful of people and a few license purchases, but my motivation to keep Updatest working is purely selfish - I rely on it for multiple machines I own and I need it working!
Success for me is someone tried Updatest, learned all the brew stuff and either decided to stick with Updatest, or start using Brew full time in the terminal. Either way, it’s a win for me.
I already knew most of the Brew stuff and was using that in the terminal, before stumbling upon Updatest, and will keep doing that, but still decided to buy and use Updatest…
Please consider that a success (and maybe even a bigger one?) as well ![]()
