MBP Heats with Lid Closed

Hello,

I’m running a 2017 MBP on High Sierra. During the past few months, I noticed that whenever I stow my MBP in my briefcase and retrieve it later, it’s usually warm with the battery drained. I ran syslog to try and find the reason using

log show --style syslog | fgrep “Wake reason”

I’ve listed the syslog entires I got for my short commute around 90 minutes ago below. What’s interesting is that EC.DarkPME (Maintenance) and RTC (Alarm) seem to be triggering the wake up, and they are repeating.

For reference, Power Nap is off, Amphetamine is off, bluetooth and wifi are both on.

I found this article with possible solution, but have not tried it yet. By the looks of it, it seems to be a recurring and somewhat common issue with the latest update on High Sierra.

I’m wondering if other people faced the same issue? Also appreciate views and advice on how to correct?

Have you tried resetting the SMC?
Reset the Energy Saver to Defaults (System Preferences > Energy Saver: Restore defaults)

Quit all applications and open the Activity monitor and see what is still running.
To see a bit more you can also open Terminal and enter “top” to see all processes.

Have you tried turning on do not disturb?

I would always check Apple’s knowledge base articles. In this case, there is one detailing some troubleshooting steps:
