Mesh networks & backhaul (or the lack thereof?)

So let’s say I buy a two-point mesh network. I put the “main” device by the cable modem, and the “extender” back in my office.

If I have three devices in my office on wi-fi, do they have to hit the extender, go back to the main, and then come back to the extender to talk to one another? Or are these extenders smart enough to just route them at the extender without backhaul to the main?

If both devices are connected to the same node on a mesh network, they’ll communicate locally through it and not disturb the rest of the network. I just called Eero to double-check that is true for them.
