Mojave beach balls 🏖

I upgraded to Mojave the other day (upgrading from Sierra). I’m getting a lot of beach balls. Especially when I’m writing something to the disk. Whenever I create a new file in Sublime Text, for example, the app crashes for a bit. Chrome, iTerm 2 and are all crashy as well. Any suggestions that don’t involve installing from scratch?

Check the activity monitor.

There was nothing suspicious in the activity monitor, but the beach balling seemed to happen when I was writing to the disk. So I repaired disk permissions with Disk Utility (supposedly redundant post-Yosemite). I also reset the PRAM and the SMC which are touted as magic fixes in cases of weird slowdowns and… it looks like the issue is fixed. At least, creating a new file in Sublime Text doesn’t crash the app now.

I spoke too soon. The beach balls are back :frowning:

I solved the problem by reinstalling Mojave from macOS Recovery. Sublime Text works now, along with a host of other file related-issues, such as missing thumbnails for images on the Finder, etc. Let’s hope this fix lasts!
