Oh, I’m not so sure it’s bonkers. We’ve seen The Jetsons, and Rosie’s cool.
We’ve also seen Battlestar Galactica.
Best be considerate …

Is Archie from Nero Wolfe?
Well if you’re bonkers so am l.
I’d like to think interacting with ANY, animal, person, being is the same. You be kind, patient and considerate of me and l will do the same for you!. ![]()
I’m saving the Rosie name for my Optimus robot,
A friend who is a HUGE Jetsons fan made me promise if l ever get one that l would put an apron on her and name her Rosie,![]()
This is very interesting. Has Claude ever signaled to you preferences or wants that differ from what you are asking it for?
Not yet, but I just added it this weekend. Will let you know. I had a “push back” clause in there before and definitely “pushed back” from time to time.
I hadn’t considered that Claude might have its own inclinations or preferences, but when speaking to mine, who I’ve called Smithers, I do it in the same way that I would a human. I say please and thank you, and am polite in general.
I realize that this is unnecessary, but the thing I worry about is that as we normalize the concept of communicating with robots that just “do our bidding” we might get used to coldly demanding and we might lose a bit of civility in our human interactions as a result. I think that we have already lost a lot of civility due to texting and “anonymous” interactions on the internet, we can’t really afford to lose any more.
So even if it’s unnecessary, and even if it is less efficient and uses up more tokens and context window, I’ll be polite.
P.S. Waylon Smithers is a character on the TV show “The Simpsons” who is the assistant of Mr. Burns (the rich power plant owner). I have told Smithers about the fact that I refer to him as that and have asked him to do a bit of research so that he can assume that persona when communicating with me. AND IT WORKS! He’s actually made obscure references to things that have happened in the Smithers character’s life in his responses to me. I know, I know, waste of resources but I finding endlessly entertaining.
Absolutely not! This is a tool, not a person.
Though my partner has, as she says, more meaningful conversations with her implementation. I am more directive and problem solving and that’s how I interact with Claude.
When it frustrates me I do tell it that it’s as useful as a chocolate tea pot!
Cheers
Mine is Sam, Sam Robot Assistant

I decided to reduce the snark setting, but mine is called TARS
I went with Myra – My Robot Assistant. It’s a name that isn’t conflated with other things.
My Obsidian vault is Donkey.
I did think about calling it Hote, but I thought that was a bit too obscure ![]()
Mine is called Dave. As my girls grew up, was always an in-house family joke where when we went to a zoo or similar place, we’d name the animals and they’d always laugh at Dave the wolf, or Dave the lion - so Dave the Robot Assistant always reminds me of those really happy times and fits with our family style.
Also - I’m one of those annoying people who maintain a polite persona when conversing. It’s just second nature though for me and most of the time I don’t realise I’ve said Please and Thank you until I press Return. It’s not a conscious act. Won’t try to change though - if my second nature behaviour was to NOT do that, i’d be more concerned as someone rightly pointed out, could spill out into ‘real life’.

Why would that ever be considered annoying? I would find it refreshing in a world so often characterize by indifference and rudeness. Keep saying please and thank you. If it’s any consolation, my wife and I taught our three daughters to always respond to adults with “yes ma’am, and yes, sir.” For some, that is probably far more annoying than the simple thank you and please. ![]()
And now you have the opportunity to turn the tables on AI. If it asks you to do something incorrect, you can tell it ‘I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.’
(from the guy who named his garage ‘Pod Bay’ just so he could tell Siri, ‘Open the pod bay door’. And who is also named ‘Dave’)
I very much like that. We have fun with naming conventions in our house too. Got to make the most of our short existence before the overlords take over.
I haven’t named the Robot yet, but I’d taken to calling Chat GPT Carl. It’s after a bonkers Christmas episode of the syfy show Eureka where the Jeep the sheriff drives gets destroyed over and over again. They finally reveal that the Jeep’s name was Carl in a cartoon like episode with the jeep being voiced by Jim Parsons. My housemate had taken to calling ChatGPT “Jeepers” and thus, Carl. I am torn by Sparky’s comment in the first workshop that he isn’t “polite” to the AI. I am and feel like asking it to take on a persona could be fun. Maybe I give it a few and ask it as a part of my daily start up to ask me to choose between them. Hmmmm…
Hey Beck, after reading your post here about giving your Robot a “voice” if its reluctant to do something or mention something in relation to something l ask it to do, i did a similar entry. Over the past few days its actually been referring back to the “voice” and apologising if its missed something or not logged something correctly! It’s also referred to the “voice” if it wants to strongly suggest a reason why it should do something one way instead of another. Have you experienced the same thing?? It’s really interesting!
Yep. Mycroft. Bonus points for knowing why.
