There are a lot of free font apps out there (in the Mac App Store alone I’ve used EverFont, FontScape, and Font Preview); add a new, powerfully customizable one just out - FontGoggles (Github .dmg download), which was apparently funded at least in part by Google Fonts.
For quick-and-dirty comparisons I still will probably resort to FontScape though.
