I never even thought about it until @MacSparky mentioned it on MPU, and then @ismh endorsed it. I just swapped out the wheels on my home office chair for one which look like inline rollerskates and they’re brilliantly smooth and even make the seat a little taller.
We just moved and our office is on a hard floor and the roller blade wheels are fabulous.
We had them on carpet for a while and they were terrible - too grippy!
I am totally doing this as well. I’ve had a AMZN Gift Card sitting in my email Inbox for months and now I have a few things to use it on! Great idea!
New wheels were a game changer for me. I have wood floor and used some of the rollerblade wheels. Love them.
I have a hard plastic mat over carpet and it’s brilliant. Cost about £32 and it’s saved our carpet.

What is the practical difference between these roller blade wheels and the ones the chairs come with? I have considered it in the past but can’t figure out what problem these wheels would solve for me…
Simply put, the chair moves much more efficiently on the roller blade wheels. I have purchased 3 sets.
They roll pretty silently and don’t damage hard floors like plastic ones might.
On carpets, I’d stick with the ones that come with the chair personally.
For me, I rotate aound about 270 degrees and the double wheel standard chair wheels can’t do that at the speed I desire. The accuracy of stopping is, shall we say, not great for the standard wheels. We have hardwood floors but I have a thin pile as in non-existant carpet under my chair(industrial entrance rug) after wearing tracks in the hard wood finish before.
These wheels work great, glide smoothly, don’t result in my banging my knees on stuff as I zoom around and put me up just enough higher that in my drafting chair (our desk is built-in and taller than a normal desk) I can easily see the computer screens without resorting to risers or other stuff on my already overcrowded desk.
