OMG Big Monitor

I use a pair of 1080p 27 inch monitors. This allows me to make better use of Spaces than I could with one large monitor. The monitors fit together imperfectly, but well enough. At some point I plan to get two higher resolution monitors, each 27 inches or larger, on a stand designed to fit them together more or less perfectly.

My son clued me into the joys of multiple monitors twenty years ago, and I’ve done that ever since. I’ll suggest you try having one in Landscape and the other in Portrait orientation. The portrait orientation works great for viewing PDFs, and can nicely display two apps, one in the top half and one in the bottom half. It also takes less desk space.

I really like the portrait + landscape combo as well. Monitors take much less desk space in portrait mode than in landscape mode, making it more practical to have two monitors on a desk.

I guess the ideal situation would be where the monitors could easily be rotated between landscape and portrait. I haven’t looked at stands recently, but it shouldn’t be too hard.

This was on top when I did a Google search.

@adamashlock Pushed me over the edge. I went with this one:

It arrives, well, any minute now.

I chose the more expensive model because I like the Dell brand for displays, and because a $200 display made me suspicious that maybe the build quality was lacking?

We purchased some 27” Retina iMacs in 2014 and I tried one for a couple of days. At that time I was using a 13” MBP and had a 21” iMac to remote into Windows servers. It was way too big for me.

I still use a 13” laptop, and an 11” iPad.

Isn’t the MBA-M1 limited to one external monitor?

DUUUUUUDE that is going to be wicked!!! So, I’m cheap and have always had good service out of Viewsonic. Can’t wait to hear how you like that monster!

I travel a lot and worry about adjusting back to a 13” frame will work. Meh…caution to the wind! :joy:

It does depend on the apps in question and how you use them. For instance, Photoshop or its ilk is probably terrible on a vertical monitor. But I guess if you have one each way, then you can choose to put it over on the landscape one.

But… then you have limited certain apps to one of your screens. This may be fine, but it is a consideration.

I have used dual monitors at work for a decade or more until quite recently when I replaced it with the 32" 2.5K one mentioned above. The reason I did that was equivalence to my Studio Display, however it has generally been an improvement because of that bane of all dual monitor setups…

Unless you* like a wild and free lifestyle, getting two monitors to both be level, both have the same colour reproduction, and always stay in the same relative alignment, that way madness lies.

The “best” monitor set up is one that works for you*, which is possibly different for everyone. But don’t think that the one you’re used to is by definition the best.

*You above refers to anyone and everyone here.

I’m always surprised no-one talks about resolution. Text on a 5k iMac was/is as crisp as it can be. On a 27" or larger monitor with a resolution of less than 5k text will never be as sharp.
For gaming this isn’t an issue of course.

It’s definitely a compromise between screen real estate, resolution, and budget and we each have to decide what works for us. I think we all wish manufacturers made more retina-quality monitors at a variety of sizes and shapes at affordable price points, but the reality is we just have a handful of ridiculously expensive monitors at 27in and 32in.

I used to have two 27” monitors in a V configuration, and loved the screen real estate. But I found that text looked distorted on the inner and outer edges of each. So when I see one of these huge, curved monitors, I really want to buy one because it seems like the curve would eliminate some of the distortion.

But I’ve never seen one where the text was sharp enough for me. That’s my biggest priority, so I’m waiting for the next gen Apple Studio Display, or another monitor where the text is just as sharp when used with a Mac as the Studio Display. I wish other companies would offer this level of pixel density in their widescreen monitors for Mac users who prioritize resolution.

I’ve been a frequent business traveler for many years, and routinely and effortlessly make the transition from a 13" display to 27" and back again. You’ll be fine.

DUUUUUUDE I’m STOKED.

It arrived late last night. I’ve been busy since then and have not had a chance to take the display out of its box and set it up. First I need to clear my desk and that’s not a small project.

:flushed: WHAAAAAAATTTTT??? How could you even sleep with that lingering alone in its box :joy:

That’s a stretch. I talked about it earlier in this thread

I certainly have not noticed this. Why would that be? Do you see this distortion when you are just looking at one monitor removed from the other?

With my setup, a window cannot span two monitors. Did you have some other setting that permitted this?

I thought I did? Text can be perfectly sharp on a 32" 4K monitor… if you decrease your effective pixels and sit further back.

I blame Windows users… they haven’t seen the light. Pun absolutely intended.
