I’m processing a large number of PDFs by making rules for them in Hazel. I have Hazel on my macbook’s built-in display, and finder and pdfgear on my external display. This allows me to navigate files, OCR pdfs, write Hazel rules, and view opened PDFs.
However, when I double-click a PDF to open it in preview, Preview opens on the built-in display which covers my maximized Hazel window! Is there a way to configure my Mac so that when an application is launched by double-clicking a file in finder, it opens on the same display as the “parent” Finder window?
I have this problem as well, from time to time. I still haven’t find out what makes the window stick to where I want. But suddenly it does.
Maybe it has something to do which window is active when you quit Preview?
I am also thinking;
- Would it help to just preview the PDF pressing Space in Finder?
- If you have Keyboard Maestro you can force the file to open wherever you want.
- Or write an Automator script?

Adding another app like KM into the workflow is a non-starter. I’m processing thousands ( I’ll be glad when it’s down to hundreds) of documents, so the workflow needs to be lean and mean using built-in OS features.
- Double-click on PDF to open in preview
- Test copy/paste to make sure the OCR is good.
- If OCR is bad, Use pdfgear to OCR scan the document .
- Identify text in the document that identifies the document and also can be used for naming, tagging, and filing the document.
- Create and test Hazel rule.
- Enable Hazel rule.
- Monitor the first few documents to make sure it works.
- Make any adjustments and go back to 7.
