Great that it’s working. Did you have a shortcut to switch Input Sources in Keyboard Preferences? This one trips me up occasionally. I have the Canadian English input source and a RTL input source defined. Sometimes I unintentionally press the shortcut that switches input sources, which messes with whatever I’m doing.
Update: @anon41602260, this is exactly what happened. I know because it happened again this morning when my arm brushed my external keyboard and I saw “Unicode Hex Input” flash across the screen. I looked up “Input Sources” shortcuts and sure enough, there are a couple set (not any more!).
