I agree, excellent write-up!

Thanks for sharing this. I used the md file and opened in Paper and it opened instantly. I also wrote few words in some chapters and it was able to handle it well.

Thanks, Karl. Just downloaded these, and they look useful.

Given the reservations about Paper’s price (but not its quality), I thought people would like to know that it appears to have joined SetApp:

Paper on Setapp | Write in markdown, distraction-free

I’ve just downloaded it to give it a whirl…

BTW, it took me a few minutes to find out how to turn off that bloody awful drunken cursor sliding thing that Word invented as a way of punishing its users – Paper calls it ‘Smooth Movement’'. Click on the View menu, then hold down the option key to reveal several more options, one of which is Caret > Smooth Movement.

Ha ha

One of the things I love about the app is the cursor sliding but I understand why people find it annoying.

I suspected that some people would have a different view… :grinning:

I find it really off-putting – but once I’d found a way to turn it off, I was quite impressed on my quick look around with all the features of Paper, so I’ll give it a good workout. I’d never really tried it before because there was no chance of my ever paying that high price. (I don’t mind paying for software – I’ve paid a fortune for Tinderbox over the years, for example – but that’s a very complex program with no competitors, not another Markdown editor.)

But now it’s on Setapp, then it becomes a viable option.

Paper is indeed on Setapp. :muscle:

I hope that more people in this community can enjoy it now! :rocket:

Let me know if something feels off. Either here, or in the in-app chat. :loudspeaker:

And please don’t hesitate to review the app on Setapp. :innocent:

Regarding the lagginess with big files, there are many things that can contribute to it. In general, Paper won’t perform super well on very large files.

Other things (besides the files size) that can influence the speed: the presence of a character/word/page counter, very long paragraphs, code blocks (processing code blocks is quite expensive in Paper). Also, it might vary by macOS version. And, of course, the speed of the hardware matters.

The fastest setup would be: .txt files (.md ones are slower) + hidden counter.

I try my best to keep things fast enough, but it’s not my goal to be the fastest. I rarely get complaints from people about speed, so it seems fine for most. :person_shrugging:

I’m one of those who like it, heh. I even have it set to the slowest speed!
However, I have it turned off for typing. (Can recommend trying it with that off! Not that it’s an important thing, though.)

I also really like the (highly customisable) Typewriter Mode:

I don’t understand the logic here. If I want to use the app for a month, it looks like it’s $50 via IAP. If I want to use it for a year, it’s $100. If I want to buy it, it’s $200.

But if I go on SetApp, I can almost buy a whole year of my entire SetApp subscription for the $100 yearly fee for this app - and I’m wagering you get maybe $12 per year out of that, at best?

It’s absolutely your right to price your app however you like - but I don’t understand the logic that looks like it’s giving about an 88% discount if I subscribe through a third-party service. Why not discount it a bit more for the monthly/yearly direct subs as well?

It’s just a numbers game. Setapp gives more paying users at lower prices. App Store gives less paying users at higher prices. App Store is like “self publishing”. Setapp is like a “publishing house”.

Like I talked about in my article, I’ve experimented a ton with App Store pricing over the years. The result is that at Paper’s micro volumes, higher prices lead to more revenue. If I’d known a magical way to reach way more people in the App Store who need apps like Paper, I’d lower the prices there for sure.

Paper looks like a very good app.

BUT! Here in Australia it is $149 per year!!! Ouch!

For that price it would need to think of all the text you need to write and do it all for you :face_with_spiral_eyes::expressionless::frowning::disappointed:

Here it’s $99/year. I don’t think the rest of your comments would change though even at $99 Australian.
