It may have been here for a while but I just noticed it in Big Sur: safari has a built-in tabs search engine and I use it all the time now to switch from one tab to another.
To access it, you just need to pinch on the trackpad to get to the tabs overview with the previews screens, and then the caret will be focused on a search field that will filter the tabs displayed as you type.
Sharing as some may have missed it.
