Revolut will let you do this, either with single use or recurring payment cards with monthly limits. If you go over the limit you get a notification and can either approve by making an exception for that one payment or just leave it, in which case the payment bounces.
Monzo and Starling do this
After using MacUpdate for ages I finally decided that app collections werenāt for me. Iād rather select individual apps that do precisely what I need, even if the arenāt in the App Store.
Iām with you on this one. MacPulse that you mentioned is my app, but i agree, being offered as standalone is weird.
I think they are experimenting with this, but either way no matter how it goes, they should take a good look at their subscription catalog. I guess voting with your wallet is the only way to make it count.
I moved off when my annual sub came up too. Was able to move to open source things for most stuff I used often.
MacShot replaced ScreenShotX and TextSniper
Clocker (now fixed) replaced Dato
TablePlus replaced TablePlus
Thaw replaced Bartender
Tripsy is one I have not found a replacement for, itās a nice to have and their subscription is more than I want to pay for an app like that. Maybe if they do a Black Friday lifetime deal or something
A few other apps I was using Iāve just deleted for now.
The other reason was the addition of their āApp Marketplaceā - I didnāt like being sold more apps when I was paying a subscription already. That was just a bad move on SetApps part IMO.
I decided to leave around October last year and so I made a list of the Apps that were essential and bought most outright in the November Black Friday sales.
every time I have ever looked into SetApp I have been unable to justify the extra expense over/above any apps I was currently paying for, even when attempting to find something I ādidnāt know I needed.ā I use may 2-3 of the apps mentioned in this thread so far. Just quickly going through my menu bar I have:
AutoMounter
TunnelBear
DockDoor
Rectangle
Shottr
BetterDisplay
RayCast
DropZone
Very few of those are paid versions.
That might be one āI did not know I need itāā¦
Thanks for sharing!
Hookmark Bike and Busycal are my subscribe anyway apps - a number of others are useful - Iād never pay the asking price for Nitro PDF - but that would pretty much cover setapp on itās own. definitely a bonus
However just upgraded to Tahoe 26.5.1 (25F80) and something has broken
Setapp reports it canāt connect to the internet to check my sub - and all the setapp apps not only donāt work, but put up multiple messages to make life even more difficult
so though it might cost literally a few$ more, it would be well worth paying for a more robust solution, as Iāve only just renewed - Iāve asked them to honour their 30-day money back offer
