Sharing keyboard/trackpad between two Macs

Started sharing keyboard and trackpad with two Macs and loving it. So convenient to stick w/the same keyboard and trackpad between two computers … when it works. Works great when it works, and find myself constantly tweaking and trying things to keep it going. Would love to share the hardware long term.

Running into common scenarios that I’m sure have been resolved so hoping others have experience. If a system reboots (or sometimes sleeps,) the shared input devices drop out and stuck…forced to plug in a wire to a respective machine to bring back keyboard or trackpad functionality.

Always having to toggle display settings (settings panel or menubar) to get screens back. Overall too much disruption getting in the way. Had about 30 minutes of a straight run at one point and it was great. Thinking there must be settings and configurations to persist through reboots, temporarily lost connects and such. What has your experience been?

Sorry if this is in another post, but it’s probably worth telling us what equipment you’re using.
