So... Who’s getting the new Mac Pro?

That’s a bargain. Check out this Dell:

Yes, but there’s a $75,000 saving you make on that Dell too - so, absolute bargain - way better than the Mac Pro… :upside_down_face:

I have an 8-year old Synology that I’m still using and even though I like it, I am thoroughly fed up with external storage (mounting / dismounting / checking the router / managing the server etc). I want internal for everything, something that’s virtually indiscernable from the base HD, that I can set and totally forget about. The Pegasus can be upgraded later, and if at some point that’s still too small, I can add a J2i. That’s mostly for my peace of mind, for sure. (For my Plex server, the Synology does fine – but it’s not mission critical)

And shipping is free! How cool is that.

You better fill all slots with SSD drives to keep up with the bandwidth needed if you don’t want to sit and wait for large files to appear. Also have your network 10GB ready.
Last but not least I have seen SSD’s go bad pretty fast in RAID configurations. There is a limit in RW cycles depending on the RAID configuration there is a lot of that going on…

Get the Dell, and with the $75000 you save you buy the Mac Pro as well!

SSD RAID is not for the faint of budget, and generic consumer drives aren’t a good fit. 16T of enterprise-class SSDs will set you back about US$3k.

I am taking a wait-and-see approach. As in, i’m gonna wait and see if I win the lottery before ordering my Mac Pro.

If you need a lottery for justification of purchasing a Mac Pro you don’t need one.

It’s an investment for a business, just like a truck for a transport company. A tool to produce a good or service witch by itself should justify the investment.

That was a joke, son.

I’m not an iMac Pro user because I don’t like all-in-one computers. I could make a case for a Mac Pro (but not that monitor) because I do some simulation work where those CPUs can make a huge difference. Plus, with the expandability, the Mac Pro is the kind of computer you can own for ten years. I just retired my Mac Pro 2009. Since I normally upgrade on a 3-year cycle, I’d probably come out ahead.

Am I the only one that just read that in Foghorn Leghorn’s voice?

If you’re into video but don’t need Pixar-level power, looks like an entry-level Mac Pro with an Afterburner card is an absolute beast of a machine: it handles 16k video (!) –

There you go, @ismh , here’s your reason to buy one
