In support of your point, Apple appears to recommend APFS for all drive types unless HFS+ is needed for compatibility with Mac computers using macOS 10.12 or earlier.
I think the problem is that for APFS you need to be using the GUID partition map, not MBR.

I was referring to general drive use. Time Machine probably copes better somehow but regular file access was tragically slow.
I’ve got a question for anyone who uses Samsung SSD drives.
Do you have the Samsung Magician software installed?
From what I’ve read, it offers access to drive health, temperature, wear, performance, and firmware updates.
