Transferring from Google to Apple

Hi everyone. I have a personal domain which is held with Google and attached is e mail and also a Google Drive. I am currently paying for this and it used to be particularly for the Google Drive space. I now have sufficient iCloud space to move everything across and I would like to move my e mail address from Google to Apple as I don’t use GSuite and I think it is a waste of money. Is there anything specific I need to know about this, any pitfalls etc…thanks very much.

gmail, or own domain?

Thanks. Own domain but paid through Google.

The trickiest part is usually the email side — moving a custom domain from Google Workspace to iCloud Mail requires setting up iCloud Custom Email Domain, which works well but needs careful DNS record updates to avoid any mail delivery gaps during the switchover. Export your Drive files first via Google Takeout before cancelling anything, and double-check your MX records point correctly before cutting over completely.

Were you able to make the switch without any issues?

I am also thinking about moving my personal domain to icloud+ also.

I’ve been considering such a move, things that are currently holding me back:

  • Is Apple really into offering this service in the long term, I’m worried they will at some point pull the pin and I’d be back to square one.

  • Does the Apple solution have the same level of Spam and Email threat protection.

  • The server side rules in Apple aren’t as advanced.

  • Google’s productivity stuff is getting quite good, thing like auto parsing of content and smart alerts, flights with live notifications on iOS etc.

And a few more points I’m sure.

But I do like moving to a privacy first solution, that is likely more than enough to be all the reason I need.

Did you give this a go yet?

FWIW, I’ve had a free Gmail account since the beta and a Google Workspace (Apps for your Domain, etc. free & paid) for nearly as long. I’ve also had a free iCloud mail account since the @mac.com days.

IMO Apple offers a reliable, basic, email system. But its spam filter is not even close to Google’s. And neither is its server side rules.

A search of this forum should give you some good information about iCloud mail, and a web search even more.
